Romantic Clichés. Love them or hate them?

I recently came across an old article by Buzzfeed. (You can read it here.) In it they list 19 cliches/tropes that people think are annoying. Out of the 19, except for the cheating trope, I love all of them!

It got me thinking about what books I like to read. There are so many different romances out there and so many fantastic authors that we’re spoilt for choice. I tend to read the same tropes because they are my comfort. I know I’m going to get a happy ever after. (Usually! Some authors like to surprise us though!)

Here are some of my favourites.

Enemies to lovers. When the male hero treats the female like rubbish because of a misunderstanding is definitely on the top of my list, but only if the hero grovels big style when he realises he is wrong! If he gets let off too easy I feel let down.

Revenge romances where the guy is a complete douche-bag and makes his heroines life hell until he finds out he’s taking it out on the wrong person… I love it. No matter how horrible he is, as long as you can see/read the struggle he’s going through it makes the love between them all the more delicious. Of course if it were real life I’d slap a restraining order on him in a flash!

Instalove, yes please! There is nothing sexier than a man chasing a woman he’s just met believing she is the one for him. If she feels the same, great, but if she puts up a little fight against his controlling, alpha ways before finally succumbing then even better. I love it when the hero has to get sneaky trying to insert himself into her life. In real life we’d call it stalking and the girl would get a retraining order or a baseball bat, but in books I love it!

Shy heroine’s not knowing how sexy they are… Come on, isn’t it every girls dream to have that one man who believes you’re sexy even while wearing your hair in a messy bun and your ‘comfy’ clothes? It’s a huge confidence boost.

Friends to lovers is another favourite! The enormously hot, best friend being in love with the girl and everyone knowing it except her. When she finds out it all gets awkward and then they get drunk and naked and suddenly, bamm, they’re a couple.

Let us not forget the ‘claiming his mate trope‘ Werewolf/shifter romances where the alpha male sees/smells his mate and he claims her. Maybe she doesn’t know what he is and she suddenly finds herself cornered by a sexy looking male who’s claiming she is his mate. Phew, any story that has this story line I find extremely exciting. It doesn’t have to be werewolves though, Vampires, Demon’s and Angels are just a sexy! When they utter the word ‘mine’ I’m a goner!

I’m going to share some of my favourite books from the tropes. These are the one’s that I’ve reread countless times and never get tired of. (If you click on the book names it will take you to Goodreads for more info)

One of my all time favourites is Marco’s Redemption Lynda Chance gives us Instant love, a hot alpha male and a really sexy story.

Another Lynda ChanceStaking his Claim The name says it all. I’m just going to leave this quote here.“You need to have mercy on me, baby,” his tone turned slightly threatening, “before I snap.”

Cynthia Eden Midnight’s Master Demon romance with an extremely gorgeous, freakishly scary demon. I wish I could go back and read this for the first time again! I had butterflies in my tummy for the entire book.

Sylvia Day Pride and Pleasure Jasper is the ultimate alpha male. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. A bit of revenge is mixed in with this sexy historical romance but the majority of the story is about Eliza and Jasper’s relationship.

Diana Palmer Matt Caldwell There is a misunderstanding between Matt and Lesley and they start off on the wrong foot. When something happens to Lesley, Matt steps up and our romance begins. Diana Palmer is one of my go-to authors because I’m rarely disappointed with her books.

Last, but not least, The New Species Series If you haven’t read this series by Laurann Dohner you should get right on it. Seriously, these alpha male new species are all so amazing! The stories are all completely different, except for them always finding their mates and having to deal with the New Species haters. I don’t think there is one book that I didn’t enjoy. Valiant is my absolute favourite book. He is growley, pushy and surprising a little vulnerable.

I’ll stop here with my rec’s because I could go on forever and nobody wants that.

I hope you’ve found some new reads. I’d love it if you have any rec’s for me. I’m always up for finding new authors.

Happy Reading!

Coming Soon!

Hey lovely people.

I have a new book coming on the 11/02/2021. It’s available to pre-order now.

Elle’s Choice is a New Adult Contemporary Romance. It was really fun to write, mainly because she is bonkers and her friends are just like her!

Elle has a one-sided crush and has suffered through for about six years, then an incident happens and she finds herself sucked into a love triangle with no idea who to choose.

Originally, I had the story planned out and I knew would end up with but… Elle completely surprised me and the story went off course. I’m super happy with how it turned out though and definitely wouldn’t change it.

I hope you enjoy reading her story!

A bookworm, her crush, and a rich classmate walk into a library…

I’ve been in love with Tristan since I was twelve years old, and six years on, I’m still harbouring that one-sided crush.

After I embarrass myself at a party, causing a rumour to spread around school, Tristan suddenly becomes less of a stranger and more of a friend.

I don’t even have the time to process how I feel about the change before Harry, an extremely gorgeous, but totally mysterious classmate entangles himself in my life.

Suddenly I find myself in a love triangle with both of them willing to go to any length to make me choose.

Should I choose Tristan my long-term crush or Harry who’s somehow sneaked his way into my heart?

Elle’s Choice is a story of first love, stolen kisses, and friendship.
